Carey

Carey is the deeply personal project of Aarön Sáez, writer and member of Varry Brava (among other eclectic musical ventures), and Antonio Turro, producer, professor, and classical guitar concert performer.

Carey smells of the sea, of bittersweet farewells at the harbor, of hand-rolled tobacco in a Havana alleyway, all filtered through indelible childhood memories. The group’s mission is to honor habaneras—a nearly extinct musical genre with shared roots between Spain and Cuba. It struggles to survive in Spain’s traditional festivals (such as those in Torrevieja and Palafrugell), but also in taverns, in the voices of old sea dogs savoring the penultimate sip of melancholy before asking for the bill.

Or before losing their minds.

NEW ALBUM: LA CASA ROSA

With their new work, Carey aims to revisit a genre of traveling, cross-cultural music whose origins date back to the mid-19th century. A delicate fusion where Europe, Africa, and the Americas share the same table, subtly seasoned with a touch of modernity to breathe fresh life into a musical style that has long been left gathering dust in an unjustly forgotten corner.

The album features 10 songs, including new compositions and carefully crafted versions produced by a modern music band. It was recorded in Cuba with true rhythm virtuosos such as Pancho Amat (the legendary Cuban tres player), Miguel Núñez on piano, the winds of Havana D' Primera, and the percussion of master Adel González.

All of this comes together with a sound indebted to great figures like Santiago Auserón and a passion for the genre akin to Alejo Carpentier, who was so devoted that he insisted he was a habanero despite being born in Switzerland. The recording was later completed with Spanish musicians to reinforce the true essence of the habaneras—a song of coming and going.

May its echo resonate as it once did, with overwhelming force on both sides of the Atlantic.
